The 2013 Recap

Es el fin de otro año más. Y sé que nadie lo pidió. Y sé que nadie lo esperaba porque hace más de cuatro meses que no escribo nada. Pero decidí hacer una última entrada este año. Aunque lo menos que necesita el mundo ahora es otro conteo de las mejores películas del año, vale la pena mencionar todos los logros cinematográficos de este año, tanto dentro de la pantalla como fuera de ella. Así que, he aquí mi top de las diez mejores películas del 2013, junto con unas pequeñas listas que recapitulan otras opiniones acerca del año. He de mencionar antes que me faltan ver muchas de las películas que son consideradas las mejores, así que es una lista incompleta. Y es personal. Por favor, siéntanse libres para disentir. Y disfruten las últimas horas del año leyendo mis humildes opiniones.

It's the end of yet another year. And I know no one asked for ir. And I know no one expected it because it's been over four months since I've written anything. But I decided to post one last entry this year. And even though what the world needs the least right now is another ranking of the best movies of the year, it's worth mentioning all of the film accomplishments of the year, both in and off screen. So, here you have it. My top 10 movies of 2013, along with some small lists that recap other opinions. I have to mention that I have yet to see a lot of the movies that are considered the year's best, so it's an incomplete list. And a personal one. So, please, feel free to disaree. And enjoy the last hours of 2013 reading my humble opinions...

10. The Spectacular Now

No podía ser un año completo sin una película sobre los dolores de crecer, los pesares de la adolescencia, y esos años en los que todo se siente posible. El 2013 nos trajo "The Spectacular Now", sobre un par de adolescentes que descubren que la filosofía de "vivir en el ahora" no siempre te lleva a los mejores lugares. Tanto la historia como las actuaciones de Miles Tiller y Shailene Woodley son realistas, honestas, desgarradoras y encantadoras. Es un giro muy interesante a un género que ya se empezaba a sentir cansado y que te hace cuestionar la manera en que vives tu vida. La mejor coming-of-age probablemente desde "Juno".

A film year is not complete without a movie about the pains of growing up, the griefs of adolescence, those years in which anything seems possible. 2013 brought "The Spectacular Now", a movie about two teenagers whose "live in the now" philosophy doesn't take them to the best of places. Both the story and the performances by Miles Tiller and Shailene Woodley are realistic, honest, gut-wrenching and charming. It's an interesting twist to a genre that had begun to feel tired, and that makes you question the way you live your own life. The best coming of age film probably since "Juno".

9. Spring Breakers / Ladrones de la Fama (The Bling Ring) 

Puse a estas dos cintas en un mismo lugar porque son prácticamente la misma película: un grupo de adolescentes que recurren a actos ilegales para llenar el vacío que la sociedad ha impuesto en ellos. En la psicodélica cinta de Harmony Korine, es violencia y drogas en un pueblo costero de Florida. En el retrato de Sofia Coppola, asaltar las casas de famosos en Beverly Hills. Las dos cintas son una ácida crítica a la juventud americana, representando los actos, más sin juzgarlos o dar explicaciones. Las dos son alucinantes visualmente, y en ambas el guión es más una vaga delineación de un mensaje que una historia concreta. Un personaje completamente demente se roba la película; el Alien de James Franco en "Spring Breakers", la Nikki de Emma Watson en "Bling Ring". No serán las mejores películas del 2013, pero sí representan mejor lo que, aquí y ahora, el año fue.

I put these two films in a single spot because they are practically the same movie: a group of teenagers turn to illegal acts to fill the void imposed on them by society. In Harmony Korine's psychodelic trip it's violence and drugs in a beach town of Florida. In Sofia Coppola's portrait, it's robbing the mansions of celebrities in Beverly Hills. Both films are an acid criticism of American youth, that show the acts without judging or explaining them. Both are mind-bending visually, and in both the script serves more as a vague delineation of a message rather than as a concrete narrative. And in both, a completely insane movie stands out; James Franco's Alien in "Spring Breakers", Emma Watson's Nikki in "Bling Ring". They may not be the best movies of 2013, but they do represent best what the year was, here and now.

8. La Increíble Vida de Walter Mitty (The Secret Life of Walter Mitty)

No fue tan bien recibida por la crítica, pero esta cinta seguramente complacerá a la mayoría de los cinéfilos (menos exigentes). "La Increíble Vida de Walter Mitty" definitivamente es la feel good movie del año. Sigue la historia de Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller, quien también la dirige), un soñador empedernido que decide embarcarse en una aventura alrededor del mundo en busca de una fotografía. El mensaje de "Deja de soñar; empieza a vivir" es lo que impulsa toda la película, aunque las actuaciones y la estructura del guión no sean excepcionales. Sin embargo, la energía y entusiasmo con la que la cinta evidentemente se realizó se transmite totalmente al público, y en combinación con la alucinante fotografía, los paisajes y la música, el resultado son dos horas de la cual uno sale inspirado. Con todo y sus debilidades, la película te hace sentir, y siempre he dicho que ése es el elemento esencial del cine.

The film was not as well received by critics, but it will sure please the majority of the (less demanding) movie goers. "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" is definitely the feel good movie of the year. It follows the story of Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller, who also directs), a hopeless daydreamer that embarks on an adventure around the world in search of a photograph. The "stop dreaming; start living" message is what drives the entire film, even if the performances and script structure are not outstanding. However, the energy and enthusiasm witth which the film was evidently made is transmitted completely to the audience, and, in combination with the incredible photography, the locations and the music, the result is two hours of inspirational pep-talk. Even with its weaknesses, the movie makes you feel, and I've always said that should always be cinema's quintessential feature.

7. Doce Años Esclavo (12 Years a Slave)

La película que se debe ver del 2013. No sólo porque probablemente va a ganar la mayor cantidad de premios cuando la temporada empiece en enero, sino porque Steve McQueen logró convertir la ya impresionante historia de Solomon Northup, un hombre libre que es vendido como esclavo, en una desgarradora, cautivante, y extrañamente hermosa cinta que se queda contigo mucho después de que acaba. La película es llevada en su totalidad por su extraordinario elenco, liderado por Chiwetel Ejiofor, y con actuaciones secundarias igualmente brutales de Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong'o, Paul Dano y Sarah Paulson, entre otros. Una obra que más que hablar sobre lo que significa la libertad, es sobre lo que significa ser humano.

The must-see movie of 2013. Not just because it will probably win the most awards when the season kicks off in January, but because Steve McQueen managed to turn the already impressing story of Solomon Northup, a free man who is sold into slavery, into a gut-wrenching, captivating, and strangely beautiful film that stays with you long after it's over. The movie is carried entirely by its extraordinary cast, led by Chiwetel Ejiofor, and with equally brutal supporting performances by Michael Fassbender, Lupita Nyong'o, Paul Dano and Sarah Paulson, among others. A work that more than talking about what freedom means, it's about the meaning of being human.

6. Escándalo Americano (American Hustle)

David O. Russell nos trajo el año pasado la extraordinaria "Silver Linings Playbook" y no más de un año después, nos trae "Escándalo Americano", la cual podría ser su obra mejor lograda. Liderada por un alucinante elenco que incluye a Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, y Jeremy Renner, la historia sobre un grupo de embaucadores en los años setenta es tanto divertida como oscura; irreverente como perfectamente estructurada; un drama tanto como una comedia. Al principio parece un desastre absoluto, pero es una cinta con capas, con sátira, apasionadamente hecha y entregada. La película más difícil de describir del año, pero también la más entretenida.

David O. Russel brought the extraordinary "Silver Linings Playbook" last year, and not more than a year later, he brings "American Hustle", which may be considered his most accomplished film. Lead by an amazing cast that includes Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner, the story of a group of con-artists in the seventies is as fun as it is dark; irreverent as it is perfectly structures; a drama as much as a comedy. It may look as a hot mess at first, but it's a layered film, satirical, passionately made and delivered. The most difficult movie to describe of the year, but also the most entertaining.

5. Dallas Buyers Club

No podía faltar el drama independiente con la historia sincera y actuaciones deslumbrantes. Este año tenemos "Dallas Buyers Club", la historia de Ron Woodruf (un irreconocible Matthew McConaughey), un vaquero a mediados de los años ochenta cuya vida se viene abajo cuando descubre que tiene SIDA. Al ver la incompetencia del sistema médico americano, decide tomar su salud a sus propias manos y abre, junto con un transexual enfermo (Jared Leto, en una actuación realmente única), un club donde provee medicamentos no-patentados. Una historia sumamente interesante (y, más que nunca, relevante) llevada con genialidad por su elenco, es un drama pequeño con un corazón enorme.

The independent drama with the sincere story and astonishing performances could not be absent. This year there's "Dallas Buyers Club", the story of Ron Woodruf (an unrecognizable Matthew McConaughey), a cowboy in the mid-80s whose life collapses when he finds out he has AIDS. With the incompetence of the American medical system, he decides to take his health on his own hands and he opens, along with a sick transexual (Jared Leto in a once-in-a-lifetime performance), a club in which he provides unpatented medications. An extremely interesting story (and, today more than ever, relevant), carried brillianty by its cast, the movie is a small drama with an enormous heart.

4. Nosotros Los Nobles

Probablemente la mejor sorpresa del 2013 y la película que cambió el panorama del cine mexicano al convertirse en la cinta nacional más taquillera de la historia (destronada poco después por "No Se Aceptan Devoluciones" de Derbez, que hizo historia a su manera), "Nosotros los Nobles" es la mejor prueba de que México pide y tiene mucho más que dar que dramas sobre narcotráfico. La historia sobre un padre que decide fingir pobreza para que sus tres hijos malcriados aprendan el valor de lo que tienen cautivó a millones, es infinitamente citable, y refleja de una manera sumamente divertida una verdad sobre nuestro país que muy poca gente conoce. Todos la vieron en México. Debe ser vista por todo el mundo.

Probably the best surprise of 2013, and the movie that changed the panorama of Mexican cinema by becoming the highest-grossing national film in history (dethroned months later by Derbez's "Instructions Not Included", which made history on its own way), "Nosotros los Nobles" is the best proof that Mexico asks for and has much more to give than heavy dramas about drug cartels. The story of a father who decides to fake bankrupcy so that his three spoiled children can value what they have captivated millions, is infinitely quotable, and reflects in an extremely funnt way a truth about this country that very little people know about. Everyone in Mexico watched it. Everyone in the world should.

3. Gravedad (Gravity)

2013 es el año del mexicano. Derbez y Alazraki rompiendo récords dentro del país, Del Toro batallando monstruos con robots, y Alfonso Cuarón creando la máxima experiencia cinematográfica no sólo del año, sino probablemente de lo que va del siglo. "Gravedad" cuenta la simple historia de dos astronautas que se desprenden de su estación espacial y tienen que luchar para sobrevivir en el espacio abierto. La magnífica dirección de Cuarón y completamente alucinante fotografía de Emmanuel Lubezki hacen que realmente te sientas flotando en el espacio durante los noventa minutos. Una metáfora sobre la supervivencia humana más que una narrativa, la cinta vale la pena por las imágenes, y se experimenta por completo únicamente en un cine. "Gravedad" va a ser estudiada por generaciones futuras como una de las grandes cintas de ciencia ficción, revolucionaria en técnicas cinematográficas y por traer de vuelta la experiencia de la sala oscura.

2013 is the year of the Mexican. Derbez and Alazraki broke records inside the country, Del Toro made monsters and robots fight, and Alfonso Cuarón created the ultimate film experience not only of the year, but probably of the century. "Gravity" tells the simple story of two astronauts who are detached from their space station and now have to fight for their survival in open space. Cuaron's magnificent direction and Emmanuel Lubezki's mind-blowing photography make you feel truly floating in space the whole ninety minutes. A metaphor about human survival more than a narrative, the film is worth watching mainly because of the images, and is experienced completely only in a theater. "Gravity" will be studied by future generations as one of the great science fiction films, revolutionary on its technology, and for bringing back the dark room experience.

2. Kill Your Darlings

Una cinta muy pequeña, de la que muy pocas personas han oído hablar, y que inclusive menos llegaron a ver. Aunque tiene el atractivo de Daniel Radcliffe en uno de sus primeros (y mejores) papeles post-Harry Potter, el hecho se pierde totalmente en la fascinante historia y sus personajes. "Kill Your Darlings" gira en torno los jóvenes escritores que se convertirían en la beat generation de Estados Unidos durante los 40: Allen Ginsberg, Lucien Carr, Jack Kerouac y William S. Burroughs. La cinta cuenta sus días en la universidad como rebeldes literarios, las relaciones platónicas, románticas y sexuales que había entre ellos, y el despertar que ocurrió para que comenzaran a escribir, todo alrededor de un asesinato. Es un análisis complejo sobre la psique humana: la culpa, el deseo, los impulsos que nos llevan a actuar, llevada por actuaciones sumamente envolventes (Dane DeHaan es un verdadero talento todavía sin descubrir) que toca varios de los temas que a mí más me apasionan. Una verdadera joya.

A very small film, of which very few people have heard about, and even fewer got to see. Even though it has the feature of Daniel Radcliffe in one of his first (and best) roles post-Harry Potter, this fact gets quickly and easily forgotten among the fascinating story and its characters. "Kill Your Darlings" revolves around the young writers that would grow up to become the Beat Generation in the US during the 40s: Allen Ginsberg, Lucien Carr, Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs. The film tells their early days in college as literary rebels; the platonic, romantic, and sexual relationships they held with one another, and the awakening that made them all begin to write, all in the context of a murder. It's a complex analysis of the human psyche: guilt, desire, the impulses that drive us to act, carried by compelling performances (Dane DeHaan is a true, yet-undiscovered talent) that touches several of the themes I'm most passionate about. A true gem.

Un hombre se enamora de su sistema operativo. Una trama tan simple (pero a la vez rica) como ésta es suficiente para crear una de las cintas más cautivantes, hermosas, y reflexivas que he visto en mi vida. En un futuro no tan lejano (todo lo que sucede en pantalla es altamente probable, lo cual hace que todo se sienta más extraño y cercano), los sistemas operativos de los electrónicos personales tienen personalidad propia y la capacidad de sentir y evolucionar mientras más experimentan. Ted (Joaquín Phoenix; despojado) es un hombre recién divorciado y sumamente solitario que encuentra compañía en Samantha (Scarlett Johansson, quien sólo con su voz se logra robar la película), su sistema. Lo que se desenvuelve después es un análisis sobre las relaciones humanas, sobre cómo nos comunicamos hoy en día y lo que en realidad se necesita para sentirnos acompañados. Con una paleta de colores alucinante dentro de un exquisito ambiente urbano sutilmente futurista, "Her" es un deleite para los sentidos y para la mente. Es la cinta más oportuna en salir, y que seguirá resonando hasta que su premisa se vuelva en una inevitable realidad.

A man falls in love with his operative system. A stroyline as simple (but rich, at the same time) as this is enough to create one of the most captivating, beautiful, and reflective movies I've seen in my life. Set in an not-so-far future (everything that happens is highly probable, which makes it all the more strange and close), operative systems of personal electronics now have their own personality, the ability to feel and evolve with experience. Ted (Joaquin Phoenix; stripped) is a newly divorced man and very lonely man who finds company in Samantha (Scarlett Johansson, who steals the movie using only her voice), his OS. What unfolds after is an analysis on human relationships, about how we connect today and what it actually takes to feel accompanied. With an incredible color pallet inside an exquisite and subtly futuristic urban enviorment,"Her" is treat for both senses and mind. It's the most timely film in years, and one that will keep resonating until its premise becomes an inevitable reality.
